QS University Rankings by Subject: KIT Among the World’s Top Institutions in 14 Subjects

KIT achieves strong positions in engineering and natural sciences – with three subjects ranked among the top two percent worldwide

In the QS University Rankings by Subject 2026, KIT achieved outstanding results in its core areas, engineering and natural sciences.

In the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, released today, March 25, 2026, KIT once again attains excellent results. KIT ranks 42nd worldwide in the broad field of engineering & technology. In the natural sciences, it is placed 52nd. Overall, KIT is represented in 14 subjects among the global Top 100, thereby reaffirming its strong position in both research and teaching.

Leading Positions in Key Engineering Disciplines

KIT performs particularly well in the engineering sciences. Chemical Engineering reaches 25th place, followed by Materials Science at 26th and Mechanical Engineering at 32nd. These three disciplines are therefore ranked within the top two percent worldwide of all evaluated subjects. Chemistry (50th), Electrical Engineering (52nd), and Physics (55th) also rank highly. Eight additional KIT disciplines are represented in the 51st to 100th ranking group.

Strong Reputation and High Research Visibility

This year’s ranking evaluates more than 6,000 universities worldwide, of which 1,912 are included in the results. In Germany, 72 universities make it into the ranking. For KIT, the high number of citations of its scientific publications and its strong academic reputation were particularly decisive for its excellent performance.
