Today’s universities are typically focused on attracting the best students, most experienced scholars, and smartest scientists from around the world and launching most fascinating cross-border research collaborations. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is among those research and education institutions that are particularly successful in these efforts. According to the ranking of Times Higher Education (THE), KIT is in the top 100 of the world’s most international universities.
“This excellent result for KIT in worldwide comparison reflects international appreciation of our high quality of research, education, and innovative power,” President Professor Holger Hanselka says. “In our KIT 2025 Umbrella Strategy, international orientation is an important field of action, which is why we have established a separate Presidential Department headed by Vice President Thomas Hirth for some time now.”
In the international ranking, KIT is ranked in place 67. Among the German universities, it reaches place 8. Among the leading technical universities in Germany (TU9), KIT is ranked in third place.
The ranking is based on the criteria of international staff, students, and co-authors as well as on the universities’ international reputations. According to THE, only a few hundred of the about 45,000 higher education institutions in the world fulfill such requirements. The internationality ranking relies on indicators of the renowned annual THE World University Ranking. Contrary to past years, however, metho-dology was changed slightly to reduce the influence of purely geographic factors.
